Unique Solution for All-glass Residence

In late August 2003, Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer Ray Mohler, president, Carefree Air, Lynbrook, N.Y., was contacted by Herbert Ment, Hewlett Harbor, N.Y. "He asked me to come over to his house and give him a price on a commercial rooftop unit. It seemed a little odd-an industrial a/c rooftop unit on a residential home-however, this was no ordinary house," Mohler said. Ment owns a steel mill and had fabricated his residence of steel with glass panels. The house had been featured in 17 different architectural publications over the past 30 years.

An Unusual Request
Ment wanted Mohler to put an ugly 10- ton air-conditioning unit on his roof and penetrate a large vertical piece of glass passing through his living room ceiling with ducts throughout the house. "This design will destroy the entire look of the house," Mohler told Ment. "I then asked if I could look around his unique home, interview him and his wife, and asked him to be open minded to a totally new way to cool and heat a house."

A Counter Proposal
Mohler recommended three wall- mounted ductless systems for the living room, dining room and den, and a ceiling cassette for the kitchen. He then described the unique benefits of Mitsubishi Electric HVAC's split-ductless system. "Herbert and his wife could not believe that there were such products on the market." They both agreed to meet in Mohler's Mitsubishi Electric HVAC split- ductless showroom to view the systems in operation, review his original mechanical plans and estimate a price for the new project. They left the showroom totally pleased and thanked Mohler many times for finding the right product for their unique home.

By using the Mitsubishi Electric HVAC split-ductless system, Mohler was able to meet the building code requirements, prevent needless penetrations through existing glass panels, and eliminate unsightly ductwork running throughout the home where it would be in clear view. The Mr. Slim wall-mounted indoor units were compact, out of the line of vision, and required no wires thanks to the handheld wireless remote controllers. An ordinary controller would have required a thermostat wire from the blower to the microprocessor.  

In September 2003, Carefree installed three single-zone PKH36FL wall- mounted heat pump systems for the living room, dining room and den. The indoor unit of a PLH18AK ceiling-recessed heat pump system was installed in the kitchen's suspended ceiling.
