50 Years of Earth Day
50 years ago, on April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million Americans participated in marches and demonstrations to bring national and political attention to environmental issues. Their efforts influenced the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the passing of myriad laws and ordinances and the annual celebration of Earth Day.
Five decades later, Earth Day is internationally celebrated as a chance to reflect on how our choices as consumers affect our planet. In recent years, the spotlight has been put on climate change and how to mitigate its effects. Clean, renewable energy has taken a front seat as a solution.
The Fossil Fuel Dependence
For centuries, humans relied on fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, for heat. But as fossil fuel-burning technologies drove the Industrial Revolution, we saw a massive increase in consumption. This resulted in an increased concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere which, in turn, has led to global climate change.
In 2014, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a report concluding that over the span of 150 years, industrial activities have nearly doubled the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The scientific consensus on the primary cause of climate change drives municipalities, states, utilities, environmental advocates and building industry professionals to pursue decarbonization through strategic electrification.
